Well, we can't compete w/the 26 world titles..won't even try...but in the 21st Century we have 2. Youse Yankers fans have bupkiss.

Yankers are Sooooo 20th Century.

And Stealz, as far as your payroll argument goes, I have no problem with it, but that was not my point. My issue was with Yankees fans THIS year who chide the Red Sox for losing to a great Tampa team (after I should add generating the 2nd greatest comeback in post season history and turning what could have been a five game blowout into a nail-biting exciting 7-game thriller)....whilst THEIR team did not even MAKE the post season. The original post was pointing out that the Red Sox lost to a team w/a quarter of their payroll--comment made by Yankees fan--so I did not bring up the payroll issue--he did.

Just fighting fire with fire. And we Red Sox fans (yes I am one) are not arrogant. After an 86 year drought most of us were just praying we'd see ONE title before we died...we're grateful for every single title we do get...as well as post season appearances (5 in the past 6 years aint bad)....the organization is clearly doing something right.

And one final point: The core of our team--Youk, Pedroia, Ellsbury, Lester, Papelbon, Masterson--are all home grown products of the increasingly excellent farm system....not high priced rent-a-jerks like A-Rod and Giambi.

Go Red Sox!

I'm only saying that payroll arguments either way, regardless of who is making them and what they are arguing are stupid. Sorry to be kinda personal.

I don't dislike the Sox. I only like the Reds(booo), but more importantly I am a fan of the game and I can't shake the idea that so many Sox fans have apparently become what they said for so long they despised..... Yankees fans.

My argument has always been that the top payrolls should make the playoffs more often. Sometimes a team like the Rays this season will get enough young talent together long enough to compete for a couple of years. The problem is that eventually those guys become free agents and go where the money is.

The Red Sox & Yankee arguments about homegrown players aren't taking into consideration that they have the money to keep their own free agents. (I use those two teams simply because they're the ones usually discussed on here) Do you think if Jeter had started his career as a Pirate he would still be there? Of course not, he would leave for the money.

The Yankees spent 33.67% more than any other team in baseball on salaries this season. This figure doesn't take into account the approximately $24 million dollar luxury tax they'll have to pay in December for spending so much on salaries.

I don't know about the business you are in, but in my business if I were able to get product/supplies/labor 33.67% cheaper than my competitors I better damn well be doing better than they are. If my materials, etc... cost 33.67% less I should get every job I bid on. Why do you think Walmart makes so much money?

If the teams with higher payrolls aren't consistently in the playoffs than someone isn't doing their job well. And if you spend 1/3 more than your competition you should make the playoffs.

You're right, the more you spend the more success you should have but it doesn't always and rarely works that way. On average it does, but by rarely I mean how often do the teams with the 8 highest payrolls all make the playoffs in the same year? It doesn't happen which is why, I assume, you very carefully used the word should.

Yeah, you would think the Yankees would make the playoffs every year that they are outspending their competition by such drastic proportions and they had every year since 1995 (not to mention the were up by 6 and a half with 8 weeks to go in strike shortened 94). And they kept spending more and more every year which tells me they've had the capital to do so. $$$ begat success which begat $$$ which begat sucess and so on and so on.

Your points are taken but you make it sound (to me) as though the Yankees are some poorly run franchise that has never won before and only recently began shelling out so much bread. They've been doing it for some time now and they've been winning more consistently than any other franchise in the history of the game. One year an anomaly makes, not a trend.

Again, I'm not a Yanks fan, but 26 titles, 39 pennants, 15 division titles, and 3 wild card berths speaks prtty damn loudly. In fact, it downright screams.

My last word.

This is a Grateful Dead forum. I've never started a sports thread on here, and I've certainly never hijacked a music thread to spew my baseball knowleddge, things you do just about every day. You are polluting my Grateful Dead experience with your sports bullshit, daily - and isn't that exactly what pissed you off at Bob, Phil Bill & Mickey recently?

You are a giant screaming hypocrite - "the Grateful Dead is no place for sports unless it happens to be my own".

If you come on here spewing your athletic shit, you have to expect responses, and you don't get to be all outraged just because someone is a little snide and calls you a couple of names. Keep your filthy fucking baseball out of here, and you won't hear any of mine.

And if you don't get the joke see these:
